Thanks man , u make my day. About the username and password issues , if u ve not set up any other username for that system, type Administrator for the username and for password type the password u ve given to the accessed system and if there is no password just press enter key. it will surely go through.

I can see both of my pcs on each other. Now my problem is, when I click on either pc via each other it asks me to type in username and password. What is that? Is that the information that I use to login into each pcs. If so, I have done that. And it is not allowing me to see nothing still. It still wants the username and password.

@seyi your problem is that you are using the gateway 192.168.1.1 which doesnt let you share the internet connection. if you use 192.168.0.1 then it will work fine ( which it did for me ) so here is the setting for vista ip 192.168.01 gateway . 192.168.0.1 and for xp matchine use ip 192.168.02 and etc ...

@pesu goto netwok connections then click set up home and small office network name your workgroup and in the process there will be an option to check " enable file/printer sharing ' which is already enabled so dont disable it ( once i did it ) and the same prob happened with me that then the vista matchine cant access file of xp matchine

Thanks for the help... But it's still not working... I have an administrator account in my xp computer with a password made, as you said. Previously, it did not have a password.. And when i first tried accessing it through network in vista, it prompted for a password.. As i did not have a password, i typed in the user name & blank password to the prompt window... And i think i changed something in the network setup wizard too...After that, whenever i try accessing the xp computer through network in vista, it says "vista cannot access \\xxx" ie, it doesn't even ask for a user name & password... Is any of this causing the problem? And i don't think i have a mapped connection either...

@pseudoanime if you can ping the XP system correctly then it seems to just be a security problem. are you accessing the XP system by clicking its icon under the "Network" window? (assuming it shows up) , otherwise just type "\\IPaddress" into any window's address bar. to be working correctly it should do one of 2 things, either give you a login window, or just show you the list of shares for the XP machine. if it gives you an error (wether instantly or after a few seconds) it may be having a credential mismatch. Do you have at least 1 account which has a NONBLANK password on the XP machine? If not, make one, or just add a password to an account (preferably admin) that doesn't have one. Also, have you ever mapped a connection to the XP machine from the vista previously? because doing so may have saved credentials for the connection. you will know if you have mapped a connection because it will show up under "my computer" along with your other drives regardless of whether you even have the cable plugged in. if it is there, just right click and delete. if neither of these situations apply to you, then lemme know. bhckc@hotmail.com

@pseudoanime
yes you need to shutdown comodo firewall.thats all you need to do.
i guess once the connection is established ,you can enable the firewall again.

@lakshmi
if you have files which you would like to share from xp ,all you need to do is enable filesharing for that particular file or the whole drive where the file is located .it works for me evrytime.

let me know how it goes ppl.

I solved my problem... Now both Xp & vista can see each other.... But I have encountered another problem...XP can access vista, but vista cannot access Xp.... At first it asked for a login but i changed something and now it says that the connection cannot be allowed or something like that.. I would be grateful if you could find a solution to my problem

@vicks For internet connection sharing to work, your computer will automatically set the host adapter (the one on your desktop that connects to the laptop) to 192.168.0.1 , and you cannot change this unless you are running a Server version of the operating system. At this point, unless you were to bridge the two adapters on your Desktop computer, this IP configuration would not allow Internet connection sharing to work. The file sharing works because both computers are on the same subnet (192.168.1.*). So if you do have the IP configuration set up manually then change the Vista laptop to
192.168.0.2
255.255.255.0
192.168.0.1
and make sure that Internet Connection Sharing IS indeed checked on under the other lan adapter's advanced settings.

@afraz you may want to simply Make user accounts on the computers and assign them a password (even if its 1234) then you will be able to type in the information when it asks you. you may have to go back into the sharing wizard for the folders/files/printers you are trying to share if you need to give access to the new users you have created.

@nick yes. i assume you mean you want to share files/printers across a wireless router. in any case you can easily do that, and if you IP settings are set to auto (whether using wireless or wired) then the two computers should be most of the way connected and able to see each other. make sure to set them both to the same Workgroup to make things easier.

@ching if you go "network and sharing center" -> "manage network connections" (on leftside list of commands) -> right click Wireless connection -> properties -> Sharing tab ... you should see options for Internet Connection Sharing. If you don't have this tab then the Internet Connection Sharing service may not be in auto mode. If you go to control panel -> System Maintenance(if in nonclassic view) -> Administrative Tools -> Services, and locate the "internet connection sharing" service and make sure it is set to Automatic. Also, if you have another program controlling your wireless connection, for example Intel's Zero Config Utility, it may not be letting Windows share that connection.

I am pretty thorough with networking and if anyone would like to email me or Instant Message me on AIM (screenname = dudman313) i would be more than willing to assist them in getting their home network running/sharing internet. The reason i am not posting the possible solutions is that for the ppl that still cannot connect after following this (well done) toturial, there are just too many factors that could be the problem. Also there may be a different problem/solution for each individual. For any of the ppl with problems still i will suggest possibly "still" wrong IP configurations.

@dexter.. simply add a password to your account on XP and then you will have something to type in when Vista asks you for it.

hi. i need help!.... I am using a Hp notebook with vista home premium sp1 and a Hp desktop with xp prof sp2 . I connected the both with a crossover cable. As mentioned in the guide I followed the instructions and successfully shared and trnsfrd the files, but I cant share the net connction.I am using BSNL evdo broadband usb device. To make the thing more clear, plz note,
I made the xp desktop as the host and the vista notebook as the client, hence the settings are as follows :

Desktop with xp pro sp2- IP- 192.168.0.1 / sub mask-255.255.255.0 /default gateway-192.168.0.1
Notebook with vista home pre sp1 - Ip- 192.168.0.2 / sub mask-255.255.255.0 / default gateway-192.168.0.1 / pref dns server-192.168.0.1
Again.. I can only share files between host and client, but i can't access net over the client ..hence the access is only on the host...
I tried the analog-x software and successfully shared the net on the client notebook, but its useless fr messngrs and orkut and few other websites......plz help me, takecare

Aon,
Mine worked by having the IP, gateway, and DNS on the host all the same number (i.e. 192.168.0.1)
For the client use another IP (i.e. 192.168.0.2) then have the gateway and DNS the same as the host (i.e. 192.168.0.2).
Good luck!

Hello,

I seem to be having a problem very similar to Andrea's, but unfortunately mine is not yet fixed. I followed the tutorial (which is awesome) and other's suggestions and have managed to connect my two computers with an ethernet cable and they are successfully sharing files. Unfortunately, the internet connection sharing is not working. Here's my current setup:

Vista Desktop connected to an XP laptop via ethernet, the XP laptop has a wireless connection which is currently shared.

Vista Desktop: IP = 192.168.0.2, Gateway = 192.168.0.1, DNS = 192.168.0.3

XP Laptop: IP = 192.168.0.3, Gateway = 192.168.0.1, No DNS Specified

As you can see, the DNS of the Desktop is = to the IP of the host... yet no internet ><

Any Suggestions?

Thanks in advance!
