Solved!!
please upgrade to vista service pack 1 and xp service pack 3 BEFORE TRYING THIS TUTORIAL.:)
This is a tutorial about how to network two computers ,one running vista and other computer running xp using simple crossover ethernet cable.this also shows how to share internet connection through crossover ethernet cable.
what is a ethernet crossover cable?
An Ethernet crossover cable is a type of Ethernet cable which is used to connect computers together directly where they would normally be connected via a network switch, hub or router. For example, you can use a crossover cable to directly connect two personal computers via their network adapters.
that was a nice introduction from wikipedia.
things needed
- an ethernet crossover cable also known as rj45 crossover network cable
- admin access to both of the computers
procedure:
using crossover ethernet cable connect both the computers
setting up vista computer
i am using Dell xps 1330 running vista home premium as vista machine.one can be using laptop or desktop, running vista;but the settings remain same.
- click on start, then right click on computer on start menu and select properties.you should see a window similar to one given below.
- under computer name, domain and workgroup settings, make a note of name of workgroup you are in. click on change if you want to change your workgroup name.

- go to network and sharing center, click on status and then click on properties ,click on continue.
- select Internet Protocol Version 4 (tcp/ipv4) and click properties
- select “use the following ip address“.
ip address=192.168.1.140
subnet mask=255.255.255.0 (this value is automatically filled once you enter ip address value)
default gateway=192.168.1.1
click on ok and then click on close and again click on close.
MOST IMPORTANT
i assume you are using antivirus protection such as mcafee, kaspersky etc.if so YOU WILL HAVE TO TURN OFF the firewall for 15-30 minutes.or else YOU CANT ESTABLISH CONNECTION you can enable firewall protection later too.once connection is established ,you can bring back the firewall.
this is all settings required under vista computer.
settings under xp computer
diasble the firewall by any antivirus system as shown above.
- click on start, right click on my computer and select properties.you can see the sytem properties window as shown below.
- click on change, and check the workgroup you are connected to.make sure it is the same workgroup on vista machine or else click and the change the name of workgroup.click ok and restart the computer.
- click on start and click on my network places under network tasks ,click on view network connections
- right click on local area connection and select properties
select Internet Protocol(tcp/ip) from the bottom of list and click on properties.
- select use the following ip address and input these values in the box provided.
- ip address=192.168.1.136
subnet mask=255.255.255.0
default gateway = 192.168.1.1
click ok and again click ok
now set the files to share and you can acess the files
Note: while accessing vista files from xp computer you have to enter username and password of vista machine.

Thanks, this work very effective…
problems start when i enable my firewall again
i use Eset NOD32 smart security 3.0.621.0 with integrated firewall, on both computers.
maybe there is something i have to change in my firewall settings??? but i really don’t know how
one more thing:
my vista laptop is connected on the internet via wireless adapter so i would like to have the internet on desktop xp too.
i tried to share this wireless connection (on vista) but this sharing seems to change the lan ip to
192 168 0 1 and removes the value from default gateway, so it brakes my connection with Desktop XP
hope you can resolve this,
thanks again
Toni
i have not yet tried this with eset nod332 smart security 3.0.621.0. in macafee you can actually enable back your firewall settings once the connection is established. i will write a tutorial once i start using eset nod32/
which router are using?do u use wireless pci card on your desktop?please get me more details.
Thanks for the information. It really didn’t help me at all. I can see my Vista laptop on Windows XP but cannot access it. I can not see the Windows XP computer on my Windows Vista. I am trying to figure out what I am doing wrong. I have my Windows XP plugged directly into my router. My Vista is wireless. I can can connect to the internet wireless from my Vista. But I just not able to access from Xp to Vista. I cannot see XP on Vista. Please help me resolve this issue.
i just wanted to know few things
which antivirus are you using?
have you put folders for sharing in xp and vista?
if you can access internet then half of the problem is solved, you need not make any changes in ip as shown above.
just disable the antivrus(or the firewall by anti virus) ,and try again.
Windows One Care is the antivirus that I am using. I have it enabled on both computers to share folders and files. I am not sure what I am doing. I normally could do this without any problems. I think it has been a long time since I config a network. So I am a little rusty. See I can connect other devices to the network but not able to see them. Last night, I was able to see the Windows XP on Vista laptop but now I am not able to see it. I disable the antivirus still same problem. My XP pc still shows my Vista pc but not able to access. It is saying might not have permission to access the network resources. What does all that mean?
you have to disable the anti virus in both the systems you are connecting.
which router are you using?
in most of the cases, router configures network automatically.you need not make any changes in the configuration.
i understand that you have enabled filesharing ,drag few folders into public folder of vista, lets see if you can access public folder atleast in vista from xp.
I am using a netgear router. I have drag the files but you still dont see the shared folder on the XP pc…The only thing you see on the XP pc is the icon for Vista pc. That is it. When I click on that icon it tells me not accessible.
this is a wonderful walkthru, in crayon just the way i need it!
i finally have my two PCs connected and pinging each other.
however, i am unable to access the host PC’s internet connection (yes it is set for sharing) from the client PC (yes it is set to share the host)
host PC = vista
client PC = xp
when i try to open a browser on the client it is asking me for an internet connection but does not see the internet connection from the host.
what am i doing wrong?
thank you for your time.
Cheers just read this and it seems ok, i am going to try it when i get home. By the way though, when you are saying to change the ip address etc. If i already have an internet connection is there any point?
andrea
i am glad you liked it andrea.i havent tried accessing internet from vista in xp by using crossover cable.ill try that soon and let you know more about it.
sean
please elaborate.
andrea
i think you might want to have a luk here.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306126/
hello! we are getting closer. i went to the MS support page and then changed by IP settings on host to 192.168.0.1 & gateway to 192.168.0.1, then on my client it is 192.168.0.2 & gateway same.
now i can see my internet connection from my client, however i still cannot access it.
when i bring up a browser i get a little box that says network connections and it is only a pick box with my AOL and AOL dialer listed. there are 4 buttons – connect, cancel, new…, and properties. when i try to create new there is not a choice for my situation and i have tried all but to no avail.
summary (because i tend to blab), i have a connection, i can see the shared internet connection, i am unable to access it.
any suggestions?
what message do u get when u click connect on aol pick box.do u see any traffic?can u ping? the more details you can provide, the better help you can get.
i figured out where the stupid box was coming from, one of my internet connection was set to dial automatically. once i made sure they were all set to never dial, the box went away.
however, is still cannot get to the internet.
does it have something to do with DNS? because from what i understood in your walkthru above that was supposed to be blank?
thanks
Thanks
Hey Thanks friend. I tried to buy you a couple beers through paypal but it wasn’t working. I could use help I’ve got technical trouble, you should send me and email. Do you skype or IM?
this is what i have now on my wired home network (crossover cable)…
vista = host, can see client, can ping client, can browse client, can run programs on client, can access internet, ip 192.168.0.1 & gateway 192.168.0.1
xp = client, can see host, can ping host, can browse host, cannot access shared internet connection on host, ip 192.168.0.2 & gateway 192.168.0.1
so what am i doing wrong? everything seems to be in place, just that internet connection sharing doesn’t want to work (yes, the host is set to share its connection and the client is set to share it, all firewalls disabled).
thanks for your time.
andrea’s problem solved!!!!!
from andrea to admin (thru email)
i messed around some more and figured it out….i set the DNS on the client to the same as the IP of the host and everything seems to be working now. thanks so much for all your help, especially the walkthru!
i owe you lunch!

Yes i was having the very same problem and nobody ever told me to change the Preffered DNS on the client computer to the host Ip address.
Why people? WHY did i have to search hours through the internet to find this one simple setting?!?!?!
Anyway, Follow the guide on this blog and make sure you follow the most important part.
Set the preferred DNS on the client computer to the host computer IP.
I have problem to share files each other after doing all setting which is shown as above.
my Vista laptop pinging to XP Desktop but XP desktop giving pinging status Destination Host Unreachable.
i’ve followed the steps …the thing is i cant ping the laptop vista from Desktop XP n vice versa …. am at wits ends of what could be the problem …..only yesterday i connected my laptop(vista) to frnds Laptop(XP)
@ scott
it should work.are you sure you are using “cross-over ” ethernet.?what error message u get when u try conecting?which anti virus are you using?
I bought a new laptop running Vista last week, and had the same problem as Nikki. I could access the Internet from the new machine wirelessly through the Netgear router, but I couldn’t see any of the three XP machines on the network. All of the XP machines showed the Vista machine on the network, but wouldn’t let me access it. I finally traced the problem to the pre-loaded Norton Internet Security on the Vista machine. I found that I could see all four computers from the Vista machine using Norton, but I noticed that each of them was labelled “Protected”. I edited this setting to “Fully Trusted” and Bingo, I can now see and access each of the computers from any of the others. Hope this helps.
thank you for your contribution dave.it can really help lot of people.
Hi Dave,
I see that you said you had the same problem as I did. Well, for me, I gave up on the issue. Tell me how you trace the problem back to pre-loaded Norton Internet Security. On my XP pc, I have tried to change or remove the Group Policy from the pc because I am not able to change the firewall setting on that pc. Please tell me how you fix the problem. I am just tired of running back and forth to both pc.
I am try this one more time with some patience. I have a XP desktop and Vista laptop. I have them both on a wireless connection. They are on the same network. I can see the Vista pc on the XP pc. However, I am not able to access any information on the Vista through the XP. 1) What have I done wrong? — Then on the Vista pc, I am not able to see the XP pc. I see the XP and Vista pc on the map drive on the Vista pc. But in the network I cant see the XP pc. What I have I done wrong? I am trying to fix this problem soon before I start my next class.
Thank you for this step-to-step tutorial! I found it very useful and easy hto understand however I still haven’t managed to connect my XP PC and Vista laptop.
I followed every step you described, and disab;ed the firewalls in both XP ad Vista. Now both computers recognize the other, but tell me I have no access.
What went wrong?
I have Vista Laptop and Xp Desktop pc…I have done all the steps and all i can do is ping one another..I used ethernet crossover ftp cable… I closed all the firewalls and still can’t see in network neighborhood nothing…
what to do, damn it
alie and tito
are u ppl using vista sp1 and xp sp3?
I know that I am using Vista Sp1 and XP Sp 3. Is that causing the issue for us?
no nikki
i just wanted to make sure that readers are using xp sp3 and vista sp1 cos i tried this tutorial on xp sp3 and vista sp1.
This is a great answer given here and it is well explained !!
great job buddy!!!!!!!!
Dave
I have just verified successful file sharing and printer sharing between a new Windows Vista x64 wireless laptop and a Windows XP desktop already connected to a wireless router after doing what you said to do, i.e., after finishing the “Remote Monitoring” setup of the two computers on Norton Internet Security, go back to the Vista laptop which shows the other network computers (now just XP-desktop) despite not allowing access to, and change their Trust Level from “Protected” to “Full Trust”. Of course, the files to be shared need to be placed in the “Shared” folders in XP or “Public” folders in Vista for printing by the other computer. I also had to install Vista x64 version of the Canon MP600 printer driver on the laptop for it to use that network printer, which already had XP version printer driver installed. Thanks for your tip. I originally suspected Windows Vista to be the culprit for this type of problems, but now it appears that the firewall setup is the problem. While some suggested temporary disabling of the firewall, be it Norton’s or Microsoft’s, apparently it sometimes involve other problems.
I’m having a problem here, I’ve already setup everything, but when i try to access my xp machine from vista it keeps asking for a password. Problem is… I don’t have a password set so I can’t even get into my xp machine to transfer files over. Any help will be great, thanks in advance.
Thank you sooooooo much!!!
Best wishes from Brazil!!!
Legend mate, you have fixed my problem. I really apreciate the time it took you to write something like this
Hello,
I seem to be having a problem very similar to Andrea’s, but unfortunately mine is not yet fixed. I followed the tutorial (which is awesome) and other’s suggestions and have managed to connect my two computers with an ethernet cable and they are successfully sharing files. Unfortunately, the internet connection sharing is not working. Here’s my current setup:
Vista Desktop connected to an XP laptop via ethernet, the XP laptop has a wireless connection which is currently shared.
Vista Desktop: IP = 192.168.0.2, Gateway = 192.168.0.1, DNS = 192.168.0.3
XP Laptop: IP = 192.168.0.3, Gateway = 192.168.0.1, No DNS Specified
As you can see, the DNS of the Desktop is = to the IP of the host… yet no internet ><
Any Suggestions?
Thanks in advance!
~Aon
Aon,
Mine worked by having the IP, gateway, and DNS on the host all the same number (i.e. 192.168.0.1)
For the client use another IP (i.e. 192.168.0.2) then have the gateway and DNS the same as the host (i.e. 192.168.0.2).
Good luck!
hi. i need help!…. I am using a Hp notebook with vista home premium sp1 and a Hp desktop with xp prof sp2 . I connected the both with a crossover cable. As mentioned in the guide I followed the instructions and successfully shared and trnsfrd the files, but I cant share the net connction.I am using BSNL evdo broadband usb device. To make the thing more clear, plz note,
I made the xp desktop as the host and the vista notebook as the client, hence the settings are as follows :
Desktop with xp pro sp2- IP- 192.168.0.1 / sub mask-255.255.255.0 /default gateway-192.168.0.1
Notebook with vista home pre sp1 – Ip- 192.168.0.2 / sub mask-255.255.255.0 / default gateway-192.168.0.1 / pref dns server-192.168.0.1
Again.. I can only share files between host and client, but i can’t access net over the client ..hence the access is only on the host…
I tried the analog-x software and successfully shared the net on the client notebook, but its useless fr messngrs and orkut and few other websites……plz help me, takecare
I am pretty thorough with networking and if anyone would like to email me or Instant Message me on AIM (screenname = dudman313) i would be more than willing to assist them in getting their home network running/sharing internet. The reason i am not posting the possible solutions is that for the ppl that still cannot connect after following this (well done) toturial, there are just too many factors that could be the problem. Also there may be a different problem/solution for each individual. For any of the ppl with problems still i will suggest possibly “still” wrong IP configurations.
@dexter.. simply add a password to your account on XP and then you will have something to type in when Vista asks you for it.
hey man i just need one thing.i can c the computers on eachother. but i cant access it asks for user name and pass and dont have pass on any of the computer. and i tried using the computernames for the user name but it didnt work. xp computer is called yazdani and the vista is called family-PC. can u help pl.
Is the anyway to do this with a wireless router?
sharing was good, but there is no internet on the xp desktop.
this is my setup:
vista laptop wirelessly connected to a router.
xp desktop crossover cable connection to vista laptop.
i have file sharing, but no internet connection sharing. i followed andrea’s instructions but to no avail.
please help.
@afraz you may want to simply Make user accounts on the computers and assign them a password (even if its 1234) then you will be able to type in the information when it asks you. you may have to go back into the sharing wizard for the folders/files/printers you are trying to share if you need to give access to the new users you have created.
@nick yes. i assume you mean you want to share files/printers across a wireless router. in any case you can easily do that, and if you IP settings are set to auto (whether using wireless or wired) then the two computers should be most of the way connected and able to see each other. make sure to set them both to the same Workgroup to make things easier.
@ching if you go “network and sharing center” -> “manage network connections” (on leftside list of commands) -> right click Wireless connection -> properties -> Sharing tab … you should see options for Internet Connection Sharing. If you don’t have this tab then the Internet Connection Sharing service may not be in auto mode. If you go to control panel -> System Maintenance(if in nonclassic view) -> Administrative Tools -> Services, and locate the “internet connection sharing” service and make sure it is set to Automatic. Also, if you have another program controlling your wireless connection, for example Intel’s Zero Config Utility, it may not be letting Windows share that connection.
Great tutorial. I’ve a HP 5630b laptop with Vista SP1 and an assembled intel based desktop running XP SP3. Even aftr following all the steps I am unable to access Laptop files from Desktop, though I am able to do otherwise. Also if I try to run any shared .exe file from the laptop a blue screen of death appears and it restarts. I am able to acces videos, music, pics, stream videos etc. Why not .exe? Plz help
I tried following setting
My XP settings – 192.168.1.136
255.255.255.0
192.168.1.1
Vista – 192.168.1.140
255.255.255.0
192.168.1.1
pref DNS – 192.168.1.136
My internet is connect on XP desktop on other lan card.File sharing on both computers working but internet connection is not working…..pls suggest.
Hey..thats superb…it really worked without even a single error !
It is not necessary to upgrade XP to SP3 it even works in XP SP2 !!!
thanks a lot for the article.
@vicks For internet connection sharing to work, your computer will automatically set the host adapter (the one on your desktop that connects to the laptop) to 192.168.0.1 , and you cannot change this unless you are running a Server version of the operating system. At this point, unless you were to bridge the two adapters on your Desktop computer, this IP configuration would not allow Internet connection sharing to work. The file sharing works because both computers are on the same subnet (192.168.1.*). So if you do have the IP configuration set up manually then change the Vista laptop to
192.168.0.2
255.255.255.0
192.168.0.1
and make sure that Internet Connection Sharing IS indeed checked on under the other lan adapter’s advanced settings.
Hello i am havin a similar problem,I can share file and everything but until now I cant connect to the internet,All I want you to do for me now is to tell me the IP,that needed to be used
..cause i can share anything but cant connected on laptop and this is what I have on my vista and xp..
ip address=192.168.1.140
subnet mask=255.255.255.0 (this value is automatically filled once you enter ip address value)
default gateway=192.168.1.1
………………………………………………………………………….
WINDOWS XP
ip address=192.168.1.136
subnet mask=255.255.255.0
default gateway = 192.168.1.1
And prefered dns server was filled on the client which is my xp ……192.168.1.140
and i also turned my host on to share internet connection
And uptil now I stil canot access the internet…
Please need your help on how to continue..please if u have a yahoo messenger u can add me to seyiniceman@yahoo.com..I would love to learn and admin please paste the procedure on how to continue from here I reALY Need it urgently
