Solved!!
please upgrade to vista service pack 1 and xp service pack 3 BEFORE TRYING THIS TUTORIAL.:)
This is a tutorial about how to network two computers ,one running vista and other computer running xp using simple crossover ethernet cable.this also shows how to share internet connection through crossover ethernet cable.
what is a ethernet crossover cable?
An Ethernet crossover cable is a type of Ethernet cable which is used to connect computers together directly where they would normally be connected via a network switch, hub or router. For example, you can use a crossover cable to directly connect two personal computers via their network adapters.
that was a nice introduction from wikipedia.
things needed
- an ethernet crossover cable also known as rj45 crossover network cable
- admin access to both of the computers
procedure:
using crossover ethernet cable connect both the computers
setting up vista computer
i am using Dell xps 1330 running vista home premium as vista machine.one can be using laptop or desktop, running vista;but the settings remain same.
- click on start, then right click on computer on start menu and select properties.you should see a window similar to one given below.
- under computer name, domain and workgroup settings, make a note of name of workgroup you are in. click on change if you want to change your workgroup name.

- go to network and sharing center, click on status and then click on properties ,click on continue.
- select Internet Protocol Version 4 (tcp/ipv4) and click properties
- select “use the following ip address“.
ip address=192.168.1.140
subnet mask=255.255.255.0 (this value is automatically filled once you enter ip address value)
default gateway=192.168.1.1
click on ok and then click on close and again click on close.
MOST IMPORTANT
i assume you are using antivirus protection such as mcafee, kaspersky etc.if so YOU WILL HAVE TO TURN OFF the firewall for 15-30 minutes.or else YOU CANT ESTABLISH CONNECTION you can enable firewall protection later too.once connection is established ,you can bring back the firewall.
this is all settings required under vista computer.
settings under xp computer
diasble the firewall by any antivirus system as shown above.
- click on start, right click on my computer and select properties.you can see the sytem properties window as shown below.
- click on change, and check the workgroup you are connected to.make sure it is the same workgroup on vista machine or else click and the change the name of workgroup.click ok and restart the computer.
- click on start and click on my network places under network tasks ,click on view network connections
- right click on local area connection and select properties
select Internet Protocol(tcp/ip) from the bottom of list and click on properties.
- select use the following ip address and input these values in the box provided.
- ip address=192.168.1.136
subnet mask=255.255.255.0
default gateway = 192.168.1.1
click ok and again click ok
now set the files to share and you can acess the files
Note: while accessing vista files from xp computer you have to enter username and password of vista machine.

I too have a dell xps 1330 with vista sp1 and a desktop with xp sp3… Now that i’ve followed the the instructions above, i can ping both the computers from one another, but then, neither computer is listed in the other’s network map… ie, xp is not listed in vista and vice versa… Could you please tell me what’s wrong? I’m using a comodo firewall… But then, is there a need to shutdown the firewall, since both the computers can ping each other… Please help me figure out the problem….
I solved my problem… Now both Xp & vista can see each other…. But I have encountered another problem…XP can access vista, but vista cannot access Xp…. At first it asked for a login but i changed something and now it says that the connection cannot be allowed or something like that.. I would be grateful if you could find a solution to my problem
@pseudoanime
yes you need to shutdown comodo firewall.thats all you need to do.
i guess once the connection is established ,you can enable the firewall again.
@lakshmi
if you have files which you would like to share from xp ,all you need to do is enable filesharing for that particular file or the whole drive where the file is located .it works for me evrytime.
let me know how it goes ppl.
@seyi
your question is already answered.read thru some comments.you will figure out on your own.
THanks for the reply, nut it still hasn’t solved my problem… See… I can access my Vista files from Xp without any problems… But he problem is that when i try to access my xp pc from my vista, it says, “windows cannot access \mycomputername” Is there any way for me to solve this? Becoz more than accessing vsta from xp, i need to access xp from vista..
Could you please help…
@pseudoanime if you can ping the XP system correctly then it seems to just be a security problem. are you accessing the XP system by clicking its icon under the “Network” window? (assuming it shows up) , otherwise just type “\\IPaddress” into any window’s address bar. to be working correctly it should do one of 2 things, either give you a login window, or just show you the list of shares for the XP machine. if it gives you an error (wether instantly or after a few seconds) it may be having a credential mismatch. Do you have at least 1 account which has a NONBLANK password on the XP machine? If not, make one, or just add a password to an account (preferably admin) that doesn’t have one. Also, have you ever mapped a connection to the XP machine from the vista previously? because doing so may have saved credentials for the connection. you will know if you have mapped a connection because it will show up under “my computer” along with your other drives regardless of whether you even have the cable plugged in. if it is there, just right click and delete. if neither of these situations apply to you, then lemme know. bhckc@hotmail.com
Uptil now i couldnt get it …Can anyone help me please…admin and my Laptop is LG VISTA……………..Whats needed to be done
Thanks for the help… But it’s still not working… I have an administrator account in my xp computer with a password made, as you said. Previously, it did not have a password.. And when i first tried accessing it through network in vista, it prompted for a password.. As i did not have a password, i typed in the user name & blank password to the prompt window… And i think i changed something in the network setup wizard too…After that, whenever i try accessing the xp computer through network in vista, it says “vista cannot access \\xxx” ie, it doesn’t even ask for a user name & password… Is any of this causing the problem? And i don’t think i have a mapped connection either…
Hi, I have taken all the steps but when trying to access my XP desktop from my Vista Laptop it says wrong password and user name? Do I use the same one as I do to login? I’m not sure why it wont work.
Thanks,
Earlier,My network was not detected because of different workgroup names…
This article gave good clarrification and now i’m able to communicate between my pc and laptop
@seyi your problem is that you are using the gateway 192.168.1.1 which doesnt let you share the internet connection. if you use 192.168.0.1 then it will work fine ( which it did for me ) so here is the setting for vista ip 192.168.01 gateway . 192.168.0.1 and for xp matchine use ip 192.168.02 and etc …
@pesu goto netwok connections then click set up home and small office network name your workgroup and in the process there will be an option to check ” enable file/printer sharing ‘ which is already enabled so dont disable it ( once i did it ) and the same prob happened with me that then the vista matchine cant access file of xp matchine
My problem is some different one. I already connect my Laptop (Tohiba L505 / Vista Home) & My PC (XP SP2) via ethernet port using crosswire cable. So I can see the shared files from eachother. So the problem is I can’t copy or move or Select shared files form other, side, The very firs second when i select a file from other side the “Explorer is NOT RESPONDING” and Stuck and after connection says “Limited or No connectity” Please help!!!!!!!.

I can see both of my pcs on each other. Now my problem is, when I click on either pc via each other it asks me to type in username and password. What is that? Is that the information that I use to login into each pcs. If so, I have done that. And it is not allowing me to see nothing still. It still wants the username and password.
I fixed the problem. I had to go in and change the information about sharing files. Thanks anyway.
nikeyta
how did you fix the problem? on my side, i can access the XP files on my vista (host) but to access vista files on xp a passord is required. what should i put there? tried putting my log in details but i failed
Hello.I would just like to say a big THANKS to u…It really helped me alot to move my data between my pc’s

hey…very informative…i am however facing a problem…i am unable to access xp files from vista…it asks for username andpassword whenever i click on the xp computer from vista….what should i enter there?
@ prateek
enter your xp username and password
At the point where you say “now set the files to share and you can acess the files” Where is this done? What files and where are they?? What window are you seeing these files in?
jb2000@millenicom.com
Thanks man , u make my day. About the username and password issues , if u ve not set up any other username for that system, type Administrator for the username and for password type the password u ve given to the accessed system and if there is no password just press enter key. it will surely go through.
