PORTFORWARDING BSNL /DATAONE UT300R2U MODEM

why portforwarding ?

portforwarding enables you to get better torrent speeds. although the torrent speed depends upon number of seeders and leechers, portforwarding plays a main role in getting high torrent speeds!. experience download speed at maximum speed after portforwarding your modem!!

for old firmware visit here.

how to portforward your bsnl/dataone ut300r2u modem?

you need:

  1. a torrent client like microtorrent (my favourite)
  2. a browser: firefox( again my favourite)

when you open the torrent client for the first time ,you will asked to test the ports to get optimum speeds(shown below)

most of the times the it wont be portforwarded and you would be directed to www.portforward.com. although most of the times the site helps you in port forwarding ,it didn’t work everytime for me.sometimes it would work and sometimes it wudn’t.there was no REALIABILITY . however it did help me partially.

the following method works everytime for me.

  • start torrent client.(read Utorrent).
  • then in the menu bar…OPTIONS>>PREFERENCES>> CONNECTION as shown below

  • uncheck enable upnp port mapping as shown, note down the random port number it will be used later. click apply and then ok as shown. now close torrent client

ACCESSING THE ROUTER /MODEM PAGE:

  • now open any browser.type 192.168.1.2 or 192.168.1.1 in the address bar to log into modem/router page as shown below

  • enter the username as admin and password as admin and click ok as shown above.that should get you to routers page.
  • once you are in the routers page click on advanced tab as shown below.

  • click on the virtual server button as shown below

  • fill the details in the page.let PRIVATE IP = 192.168.1.136, PROTOCOL=ANY, LOCAL PORT=port number you noted down earlier, select single port from drop down and click apply as shown below.you will see that virtual server list is updated.

  • now close the browser
  • now click START>>MY NETWORK PLACES>>VIEW NETWORK CONNECTIONS
  • right click on your LOCAL AREA CONNECTION>>PROPERTIES

  • click on INTERNET PROTOCOL(TCP/IP)>>PROPERTIES as shown in the figure

  • click on use the following IP address and enter the details as shown above.
  • i am using open dns server address.you can also use bsnl dns server address but they are more subject to downtime compared to open dns server address. and this guide is not tested on bsnl dns server addresses.
  • click ok to close both the windows.

here lies the catch……….

the above instructions are also given in the portforward.com. now open the browser and start surfing. if you can browse the internet pages its well and good. portforwarding is done successfully.

if you cannot browse the internet, don’t worry just restart the system.now you should be able to browse the internet .start the torrent client now.

you should be seeing a image similar to below image.

if you see the yellow triangle the port is not forwarded yet.go back to ACCESSING ROUTER/MODEM PAGE step above and redo the changes till you create a virtual server.no need to make changes in local area connection.you need not restart this time.

just start the torrent again. click on the place where you see the yellow triangle, the speed guide window should pop up.select TEST IF PORT FORWARDED PROPERLY button as shown below.

  • now the browser opens automatically ,and you should see the following page

now the port has been forwarded properly.

Note:

  • you may have to create virtual server every time you start your system. but its better than having low speed downloads.
  • i have connected to internet using usb port.and this guide is not tested on ethernet port ,i tried using ethernet,it works fine.the only thing you need to change is default gateway which is 192.168.1.1.please try the above method once, tell me if anything goes wrong.
  • visit portforward.com for more detail.:

worst case solution:

if this guide doesn’t work for you and you badly need high torrent speeds, then in the advanced tab of router page ,you have dmz (demilitarised zone) button. click on the button. you will be required to enter the the internal ip address(which can be obtained by running ipconfig/all at command prompt).

this opens up all the ports of your system to external world.it’s very RISKY(NOT RECOMMENDED) though.when i tried this the moment i opened the ports thru dmz option i was infected with loads of spyware and adware.my desktop wallpaper changed automatically and seconds later my system went on restarting,so beware!!

testing on different types of modems very soon………..

i dont have virtual server option, what should i do?

please follow nsn155’s answer below.

alright people, this for those they do not have virtual server option , all u have to do is change your modem settings to bridge connection.

initially it will set as ppoemode.first save u r modem current settings at management>settings.backup.

after u have done tht now move to advanced setup>wan>

now u will see a table. click remove on every line, and then click remove on bottom of the page, and then save/reeboot.

next after u modem is reset, again go to advanced setup>wan>u will see a table ,click edit on the first row ie pppoee row

click next, click bridging ,next, next…. and then save /reboot.

now go to control panel>networkconnections> create a new connection
click next>connect to the internet>setup manually>connect using a broadband connection which uses a username and password> click next>next>and complete the process.

and now in ur network connections u will see a new connection.click on it and enter the details and u r good to go.

and now ports will be open.happy downloading at super high speedssssss.

it will work,so dont worry. if it does not change u r modem settings as they were previously orrrrrrrr call 23234770 which is tech office of bsnl. and ask them how to change u r connection to bridge mode.

    @kesavan
what is cscz server and hlds?
if you are using ethernet to connect to modem and computer then 192.168.1.1 should open up the modem page on the browser.
if you are using usb to connect then i think you need to install the linux drivers supplied with the modem ,correct me if i am wrong.

try configuring the modem on a windows computer and then use on linux.it should work
i havent tried portforwarding on linux.

    Hi,

    great article!!!

earlier i configured it through DMZ, but considering the risks (discussed here), i now am running in bridge mode. and speeds? toooooooooo fast. earlier i used to get only around 25-30 kbps but now its like 80-100 kpbs. so thanks a lot to admin n my dear nsn :)

But one problem: m unable to open 192.168.1.1. yes same problem, page unavailable. If i reset the modem from that button provided at the rear, would it restore to the default in pppoe mode? yes, i took backup while in pppoe mode. please help in this direction.

and one more thing: earlier in pppoe mode, the connection was all time on. But in bridge mode, do i need to connect each and every time i want to use net? What should i do if i want it like before (all time connected).

Thanks a lot for this great help :)

and also since i schedule all my downloads in nights, if i standby my pc in bridge mode, and then again power-on, the connection goes off, and i need to reconnect this manually, which is not going to work for me as earlier my pc used to do this automatically. please help…

no it won’t work if you restore the modem…i myself figured out the conflict..the problem is the dialer and the modem which is a networking device uses the same ip…you might notice some thing like unindentified connection or sort of.. if you have vista you can diagnose and renew the ip…then you can log on to 192.168.1.1

The problem of disconnection, may be arising due to the fact that the connection is being given parallely.

The is connection is being splitted before it gets to the wallport. The connection which we get from outside of the house is given to the wallport(the white box).
from there it is given it is given to the splitter from which one goes to the telephone and the other to ur modem.

please check the way ur connected and try to connect as above specified and see whether u encounter the above problem.

if u have not understood the above refer to QUICK START GUIDE which get along with the modem.

Thanks a lot!!!!. Since i got hooked to utorrent, i have tring to gather info on port forwarding. All said that static ip is required. Airetel provides this . But when i called up BSNL they said static ip is provided only for Rs 3000 and above plans.

Today one of my friends forwarded this link. When i saw the 1st half, i told him that i’ve seen this (this is a screen shot of probably an MTNL connection). But when i scrolled down, i had the required info.

You can’t imagine how happy i’m to have been able to configure the modem for top speed. Thanks

    Thanks again

    I have bsnl ut300r2u , and I am on 512 kbps connection.
I tried the “i dont have virtual server option, what should i do?”.
After I deleted all rows and created a connection from network connections , I had no luck connecting to internet.

I gave up and put my computer in DMZ. The utorrent shows ports are open.
Any way what is the speed good download speed I can eexpect on my sort of connection. I see 50kpbs ?
